Rishabh Pant was named the new LSG captain.
The Lucknow Super Giants have formally named Rishabh Pant as
their captain for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
The Super Giants paid a record-breaking INR 27 crore to
acquire the left-handed wicketkeeper-batter, making Pant, the former captain of
the Delhi Capitals, the most expensive purchase in IPL history. Pant decided to
go to auction before the 18th season of the league.
Rishabh Pant entered the auction with a base price of INR 2 crore, and the Super Giants initiated the bidding process. Following challenges from Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the Super Giants made a bid of INR 20.75 crore, which the Capitals, using the RTM, matched. In order to sign the 27-year-old Pant, the Super Giants subsequently increased the price to INR 27 crore in accordance with the new IPL auction regulations, which permitted the original bidder to boost the price following the use of an RTM card.
After letting go of KL Rahul, the Super Giants were searching
for a skipper, ideally with an Indian name. Pant was the Super Giants' initial
purchase at the auction, and they proceeded to assemble a new team with an
emphasis on India's dominating pace attack.
Rishabh Pant, who captained the Capitals from IPL 2021 until
the previous season, will be leading the Super Giants for the second time.
However, Pant missed the entire 2023 Indian Premier League season as he
recuperated from a potentially fatal traffic accident.
In addition to bringing in big names like Aiden Markram,
Mitchell Marsh, and David Miller as overseas acquisitions, the Super Giants
strengthened their pace department with the addition of Avesh Khan (9.75 Cr)
and Akash Deep (8 Cr) after keeping Nicholas Pooran (21 Cr), Ravi Bishnoi (11
Cr), Mayank Yadav (11 Cr), Mohsin Khan (4 Cr), and Ayush Badoni (4 Cr).
Rishabh Pant will now work with mentor Zaheer Khan and head
coach Justin Langer to steer the Super Giants in a different direction during
the next IPL season.
