Indian cricket legend criticises Gautam Gambhir, accuses coach of reversing stance

The appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian cricket team has raised doubts over the future of the veteran batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India Secretary Jay Shah assured that Rohit will lead the team during the ICC Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship in 2025.

Regarding the upcoming ODI World Cup in 2027, it is unclear if he and Virat would be available. In addition, Gambhir reiterated during a press conference that he still has plenty of cricket left in him and that both Rohit and Kohli are part of his plans.

Former India KrishnamachariSrikkanth has pointed out how Gambhir had earlier hinted that senior players will have no place in his team if they fail to perform in the T20 World Cup. On his YouTube channel, Srikkanth declared, "GautamGambhir has made a U-turn." Before the T20 World Cup 2024, he was saying if ViratKohli and Rohit Sharma do not perform, they will not sit in my team.

Subsequently, he reversed course and declared that no player compares to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. They both have a lot of cricket left in them, so hopefully they'll be fit for the 2027 World Cup, he remarked after taking over as head coach. He is a talented player, but the next ODI World Cup is three years away, and he is already 37 years old. He will be 40 years old then.

You can't play World Cup at 40, unless you're an extremely fit person like MS Dhoni or Sachin Tendulkar. Indeed, I think Virat Kohli might participate in the 2027 World Cup. But you went too far for Rohit, Mr. Gambhir; he'll pass out in South Africa, he said.
