Sooryavanshi Must Wait for India Debut Despite IPL Heroics, Says Ryan ten Doeschate
India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has backed the team’s decision to remain patient with teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, insisting the 15-year-old will have to “bide his time and wait” for his international debut despite an extraordinary IPL campaign.
Sooryavanshi earned a maiden India T20I call-up after a record-breaking IPL 2026 season in which he amassed 776 runs in 16 innings at a staggering strike rate of 237.30, finishing as the tournament’s Player of the Tournament. His performances prompted national selectors to fast-track him into the squad, but he has yet to feature in the playing XI during India’s recent T20I series against Ireland.
Speaking after the series, ten Doeschate made it clear that while Sooryavanshi is ready for international cricket, the management is unwilling to disrupt an established batting unit based on just two disappointing matches.
“He’s absolutely ready to play international cricket, there’s no doubt about that,” ten Doeschate said. “But it’s not a question of leaving Sanju Samson out. He played a huge role in India’s World Cup triumph three months ago and also had a very good IPL season.”
Samson, who registered golden ducks in both T20Is against Ireland, continues to enjoy the backing of the team management. The assistant coach stressed that maintaining players’ confidence and offering them a consistent run is central to India’s selection philosophy.
“It’s important to send the right message to the players,” ten Doeschate explained. “We want to give players a long run in the team. As excited as everyone is to see Vaibhav play, he has to go through the same process as everyone else and wait for his opportunity.”
The management’s stance suggests that Sooryavanshi’s debut will depend more on the performance of the existing top-order batters than on his own credentials. Even during the first T20I, when India were without injured all-rounder Hardik Pandya and seam-bowling all-rounder Suryansh Shedge had not yet joined the squad, the team resisted reshuffling the batting order to accommodate the youngster.
Instead, spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar was included for the opening game, while Shedge made his international debut in the second match after arriving in Ireland.
For now, Sooryavanshi remains part of India’s T20I plans only and has not yet broken into the ODI setup. The teenage prodigy has been named in India’s squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series in England, beginning on Wednesday, and is also set to represent the country at the Asian Games.
Despite the wait, the coaching staff remains convinced that Sooryavanshi possesses the talent and temperament to succeed at the highest level. His opportunity, however, will come only when the team believes the timing is right.
