Molineux Fit to Lead Australia at T20 World Cup
Australia have received a major boost ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, with captain Sophie Molineux expected to be fully fit for the tournament despite recent injury concerns.
Cricket Australia’s Head of Performance and National Selector Shawn Flegler confirmed that Molineux is “on track” to recover in time for the marquee event. The all-rounder had been dealing with a stress reaction in her back during Australia’s recent series against India, which limited her bowling workload on the West Indies tour.
Australia’s management chose a cautious rehabilitation plan to avoid worsening the injury while ensuring Molineux remained involved with the squad. According to officials, the decision was made with the T20 World Cup as the primary target.
Molineux was recently appointed Australia’s all-format captain following the retirement of Alyssa Healy. Selectors believe her leadership experience, tactical awareness, and strong connection with the team make her the ideal choice to guide Australia’s campaign.
However, Cricket Australia has made it clear that Molineux will only feature if she is capable of contributing as a genuine bowling all-rounder. The left-arm spinner has already taken 84 international wickets and remains a vital part of Australia’s balance in T20 cricket.
With the tournament approaching, Australia will be hopeful their skipper can return at full fitness as they aim to reclaim global T20 supremacy.
