Ronchi and Oram to Skip NZ Series for PSL Coaching Roles
New Zealand assistant coaches Luke Ronchi and Jacob Oram will miss the national team’s upcoming international assignments after receiving permission from New Zealand Cricket to join the franchise league coaching setup in the Pakistan Super League.
The two former New Zealand internationals are set to take up coaching roles with Islamabad United during the 2026 PSL season. Ronchi will serve as the head coach, while Oram will work as one of the assistant coaches in the team’s support staff.
The PSL is scheduled to begin on March 26 and run until late April, which overlaps with New Zealand’s busy international calendar. As a result, both coaches will miss the Black Caps’ five-match T20I series against South Africa as well as the tour of Bangladesh in April.
According to New Zealand’s performance manager, the board fully supports the decision, believing that gaining experience in overseas franchise leagues will help the coaches grow and bring valuable knowledge back to the national setup. The move also provides opportunities for other coaches within the New Zealand cricket system to work with the senior team during the series.
Ronchi has a strong connection with Islamabad United, having previously played for the franchise from 2017 to 2021 before returning as head coach for the upcoming season. With Oram joining him in the coaching staff, the duo will look to help the team compete strongly in PSL 2026.
The development once again highlights the growing influence of global T20 leagues, where franchise commitments sometimes overlap with international schedules, even for coaching staff.
