Shreyas Iyer, Ravi Bishnoi Added to India Squad for NZ T20Is
In a significant update ahead of India’s five-match T20I series against New Zealand, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the inclusion of Shreyas Iyer and Ravi Bishnoi in the national squad as the team prepares for the home series starting January 21.
The decision comes after injury setbacks for key players Washington Sundar and Tilak Varma. Sundar has been ruled out of the T20 international series due to a side strain sustained while bowling during the first ODI against New Zealand, forcing the selectors to make changes to India’s plans.
Ravi Bishnoi, the experienced leg-spinner, has been drafted in as Sundar’s replacement. Bishnoi’s ability to turn the ball both ways provide India with an additional spin option, an asset India will look to leverage in home conditions against the Black Caps.
Shreyas Iyer’s inclusion is notable as it marks his return to the T20I set-up for the first time since late 2023. Iyer will feature in the first three matches of the series, stepping in for the injured Tilak Varma. The middle-order batter brings depth and stability with the bat, qualities India will look to tap into as they fine-tune combinations ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
India’s updated squad for the series now includes established names like Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Sanju Samson, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, and Arshdeep Singh, along with the newly added Iyer and Bishnoi.
The five T20 internationals, slated across different Indian venues, will serve as crucial match practice for both teams ahead of the T20 World Cup scheduled to begin on February 7 in India and Sri Lanka. India opens its World Cup campaign with a clash against the United States, followed by matches against Pakistan, Namibia, and the Netherlands in Group A.
While the inclusion of Iyer and Bishnoi strengthens India’s bench strength, selectors and fans alike will be keen to see how these players perform under pressure and whether they can convert these opportunities into World Cup considerations. With the series just days away, excitement continues to build among cricket followers across the country.
