Performing an inside-edged reverse sweep onto his right foot, Rishabh Pant retires injured.
On the opening day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Rishabh Pant suffered a serious foot injury that forced him to withdraw injured and get scans, leaving India hoping for a miracle.
Rishabh Pant inside-edged an attempted reverse sweep off
Chris Woakes onto his right (front) foot, causing his foot to swell and giving
him a pained appearance. His immediate swelling and incapacity to bear any
weight on the foot were concerning signs for India, but he survived the LBW
shout and the review that followed.
India's vice-captain and wicketkeeper, Pant, needs a
golf-style cart to help him leave the field after receiving on-field medical
care. Captain Shubman Gill visited him at the ground medical center after he
was transferred there, and he later had scans at a hospital.
Although England spinner Liam Dawson expressed his best
wishes for Pant, he "can't see him playing much more part in this
game." The pain his partner was in was explained by B. Sai Sudharsan, who
was the non-striker at the time.
Sai Sudharsan remarked, "Oh, he was in a lot of pain, definitely." However, they went for scans. Overnight, we shall learn
[more].
If the injury proved to be significant (maybe a fracture),
Sai Sudharsan was asked how much of a loss that would be. "Obviously, he
was batting really well," Sai Sudharsan stated. "A hitter who does
not return will be missed. It will therefore undoubtedly have repercussions.
But we will try to give it our all and bat for a long time so that we can
effectively handle that loss with the batters we currently have batting and a
few more all-rounders inside."
A straight sweep for four off Jofra Archer and a failed
reverse sweep off the following ball were two of Rishabh Pant's trademark crazy strokes in his mostly restrained innings of 37 off 48 balls.
After being hit on the left index finger during England's
opening innings at Lord's, this is his second injury in as many Test matches.
For the remainder of that Test match, Dhruv Jurel filled in as India's wicketkeeper.
Pant was allowed to play in Manchester despite experiencing discomfort when
batting.
