Over IPL Auction Clashing With Perth Test Blunt Digby T20 World Cup Champion
With the third and fourth days of the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Perth clashing with the IPL 2025 mega auction, former Australia captain Aaron Finch noted the influence of the BCCI in shaping key cricketing events. The IPL auction, taking place on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, will kick off shortly after the day’s play ends in Perth. Finch remarked, “It’s unusual that the auction overlaps with a test match. Time zones are different, so it’ll be after the day’s play, but having it between tests would have been ideal. The BCCI, when they want things to happen, usually get their way.”
Callum Ferguson, another former Australian cricketer, expressed disappointment on Cricket Australia’s behalf. “It’s unfortunate for CA that this happens during a marquee series, especially Australia’s first home Test against their biggest rival. The IPL is a huge draw, but this scheduling is disappointing.”
The pull of the IPL auction is so strong that several key figures will miss part of the Perth Test. Australia’s assistant coach Daniel Vettori will attend as Sunrisers Hyderabad’s head coach, and Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer will skip commentary duties after day one to participate as head coaches of Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants.
Ponting shared, “It’s not ideal. We thought the auction would fit between tests. I’ll call day one, then fly to Jeddah late Friday, and depending on how things go, I’ll return to the Test or be back for Adelaide.”
