Indoor Test matches are proposed to be held at Hobart's new all-weather cricket stadium.

Hobart is set to revolutionize the game with a proposed indoor stadium capable of hosting Test cricket as a development for Australian cricket and sports infrastructure. This ambitious project, tied to Tasmania’s entry into the Australian Football League in 2028, promises to put the island state at the forefront of sporting innovation. The proposed 23,000-seat multipurpose venue at Macquarie Point is a key component of Tasmania’s bid to join the AFL.

This stadium has a transparent roof, designed to accommodate both daytime cricket and floodlit T20 matches. This unique feature positions Hobart to potentially become the first location in the world to host indoor Test cricket. Anne Beach, CEO of Macquarie Point Development Corporation, emphasized the focus on red-ball cricket. Beach said, “We want to get to the red ball; that’s our focus.

What's tricky is... We must continue working through the detail and design process with Cricket [Tasmania] and Cricket Australia in order to be approved before it is completed. We must also collaborate with them to brief the ICC and ensure that they have all the information necessary. He went on, "We are working with them through a detailed design process, so we are making sure we are accounting for everything they require, so they can see how it's coming together, and ideally that sign-off process is quite smooth.
